Pointless exercise?

Here is an ash twig I picked up and set about with sharp tools. You will notice the following points:
It has an acorn carved on it, unlike ash trees, which Do not.
It is completely useless for eating with.
It has a split on the other side, which you can't see but I can.

However, I have learnt that ash is really nice to work with and it has given my children something new to poke each other with, which is possibly the whole point after all.

Exercise is never pointless.

Looks like it would make an excellent Salt spoon too.
Nothing is pointless when doing crafts. You have learnt that Ash is a good wood to work, and your hands will have learnt how different pressures, angles of cut and the like produce different results on the wood.
