Having looked at the torch found by Duncan I can say without having one that It will probably be fine but with a few caveats. This torch will not be regulated and like any regular incandescent bulb torch will get progressively dimmer as the battery depletes. You will not get full output for 45 hours @ 220 Lumens guaranteed. This may not be a problem though?

I can't see it having any modes so will be full output or nothing and this IMO is bad if you need to do stuff onboard without ruining your night vision. This could be overcome by getting a cheap low powered torch for deck use as well as the big one for longer range stuff?

If the torch doesn't float how about getting a retractable dog lead type thing and tie it to the light?
