My Nephew and I ventured out for our second overnighter of 2025 on the nearest weekend to the blood moon, felt appropriate after the last one was during the planetary alignments.
We had plans - me to make a fire pit and a camo hammer and him to sleep in a debris shelter overnight.
I also set him an additional challenge of lighting a fire using only 1 match and no fire lighters etc.
I slept in a hammock this time, much better night sleep with no hip pains in the morning!
My setup

My nephews set up - he constructed 80% of this with me o it making sure it was structurally sound and wasn’t going to fall on him, I basically fetched branches from wind blown tree for the roofing, and he did the rest.

I then made a camp hammer, which enabled me to make a wind break for our permanent camp area. There are about 40 wind blown trees from the storm earlier this year about a 1/4 mile away so plenty of green branches for roofing and fencing. We are also blessed with a large hazel coppice about 1/4mile in the other direction - all the poles we could ever want.

My nephews one match fire

Dinner time
Meatballs, basil and tomato sauce, rice and green beans

Then some moon watching, it was BRIGHT

Before we retired to our respective beds, him about 100m away from me as he wanted to feel like a survivor.
Woke quite refreshed in the morning, and set about cooking breakfast

And after breakfast my nephew built a small shelter and I staked out our fire pit ready to be filled with clay.

36 hours in the woods and I am not sure what I did with my time…. Another great digital detox and headspace
