So here's what I've been told by the oldest sage of the area; it seems that the peel does upset some people and cause gastric upset, but no danger. Back in the day people didn't cook a meal for the people in the household
in the same way as we now would, but all the food you could afford to cook would be done in the almost certain knowledge that somebody or other unexpected would be in the house and it was always unheard of for anybody to visit and not be fed, so all known irritants like this would be avoided as a rule in order that whatever your diet, you could safely eat where you found yourself at feeding time.

An old - fashioned notion of manners and hospitality these days, but a nod towards some of the better social conventions that are disappearing, sadly.
