Hi, I am new to bushcraft and was just wondering what people carry for a overnight stay somewhere they have never camped before? Also for everyone who carries a tarp, I was wondering what size tarp they carry?:)
Thanks, Ben.

Hi Ben,

And welcome.

It's difficult to answer your first question without some specifics, i.e. - what's the environment? Woodland? (Broadleaf? Coniferous?) Moorland? The beach? A farmer's field? Are you going to have to be totally self sufficient? (water, food, sanitation) or is there a convenience store nearby. Are you travelling by car with a short walk? Or are you doing some miles the old fashioned way?. An overnighter can involve carrying next to zip - or the kitchen sink (especially at this time of year) depending on the answers to the above. Let us know what your planned overnighter entails and you will get a wealth of replies on here.

In answer to your second question: In my experience, for solo or two-up use - a 3m x 3m tarp creates a room size shelter with little weight penalty. The size also allows it to be rigged in any number of ways depending on the weather/ position of the fire etc.

Good luck

Fin

Hi Fin, Thanks for your reply:)
I wanted to leave the enviroment out so I could see what people carry when out for a overnighter somewhere they have never been before, but my usuall camp spot is a short walk away where there are alot of trees but then opens to fields where sheep are sometimes kept, There is running water near by and there are birds, fish and squrrel in the area but i tend to take food with me. I want to build a kit up that i can carry with me to diffrent places i have never been before and not be out of my comfort zone and also a kit that can last more that one night if need be.

Thanks again, Ben :)

Hi.

I take two tarps. 3x4.5m for my hammock, and a 3x4 for the chilling area.

I take the usual. Axe, wash kit, clothes, food, water, brew kit, foldable chair, hip flask etc..

As others have said, it depends on what I'm doing and where I'm going as to what gear I take.

The basics would be:
  • Something to sleep in (hammock / bivvy bag etc)
  • Something to cook on (various stove options here from Honey to multi fuel pressure )
  • Something to cook in (depends which stove)
  • Shelter (tarp or less frequently these days a tent)
  • Food & water
  • Change of clothes
  • Knife & folding saw
  • Axe (not always)
  • FAK - never used, always packed
  • A book
  • Phone
  • UCO candle lantern
  • Small torch & Head torch
Tarp wise:
  • If I'm ground dwelling its a 3 x 3m DD
  • If I'm swinging in the hammock its a 3 x 4.5 DD Tarp XL
  • If it's a static camp (Scouts)then I take a huge Tatonka 4.5 x 4.5m tarp and a parachute for a communal area.

HTH,

Simon

now that list is probably what we all take but it veries from person to person
cos for instance if i am car camping i will take the hammock and tarp to kip in and also the bell tent to use as storage and to sit in on a night if on my own or with gf but if theres a communal fire well i will sit round that

tarp wise i have only one and in my opinion the best and that is the true north outdoors large 4.5 by 3 meter tarp

I would say you have it all right Ben. . If you have the basics, which you have, everything else is Gravy. Having said that i always have a small first aid kit in a zip bag and a 8 x 10 tarp. I dont use a headtorch/light - just a mini maglite, its enough IMO Too much reliance on "kit" is a bad thing IMO tho its nice to have.
