Rats and moisture too I guess. The grain, when just harvested tend to get very hot if they are moist, there even has bee some fires starting in the old days before industrial drying took place. So this is clever both ways I guess, wind keeps the floor cool too. Clever design, I've never seen staddle stones done over here..
