So a couple of years ago I went hammocking for a night in a wood on the Isle of Wight. It was terrifying, I heard voices in the night and spent it clutching my knife and peering out my hammock in fear. Flash forward, and seeing as now I've slept with just a skin of canvas between myself and a pack of ravenous hyenas, (not to mention the alarming porcupine) I figured it was time to face the fear and head back there for a night.

It started off well, considering mobile data has apparently yet to arrive on those far flung shores and I had to make my way to the woods without Google maps. I faintly miraculously remembered the way without getting lost and despite having a minor breakdown while fighting through brambles to get to the 'nice bit', I got there relatively unscathed.

Turns out I've gotten pretty rubbish at bushcraft. I tried to make a pot hanger for my scrappy home-made billy can and it just fell down. A lot. I ended up just holding the thing on a stick over the flames for 15 minutes!

I did find some king Alfred cakes and get one to catch an ember though.

Not a bad view to wake up to. And there were no voices this time. Unless you count the loudspeaker and music booming from the festival that was apparently happening next door....
