Depends on the details of the wood anatomy. Principally, the difference between ring porous (yes) and diffuse porous (no, don`t even try).
Of the ring porous genera, Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra) appears to be the best of the best = most easily worked wet and green/fresh.
First Nations, like in the video, have done this paleo-style for many centuries.

I don't have any idea if your Fraxinus excelsior (European Ash) will be OK or fight back.

I don't know what is local that could be worked that way but for sure I wont to try that!

That's the kind of television I could watch for hours!

I've made baskets from white oak in the past. It's a similar technique, though Quercus doesn't split along the rings like Ash does.

Always wanted to try my hand at wickerwork using European willow. I read a book ages ago about the British basketry industry and all the variety it had. Sad to see that go the way of the dodo.
