I have been working on a new knife. I think I may keep this one for a while!! Well, that probably will depend on the total cost of the op on our dog tomorrow :( !

It's got a straighter cutting edge than my other knives, 3 3/4" cutting edge, 25mm wide blade. Again full tang, with a more "woodlore" type handle and a copper butt end. In fact I am thinking to call the design "copperhead" and use a snake as a symbol!! Again, I have done some filework on the back, which I enjoy doing enormously. The scales are Birdeye Maple, the pins will be 6mm copper rod, and I am looking fore some small copper pipe for the lanyard tube.

I have not hardened the blade yet, and am using wood temporary wood pins. The handle is just roughed up, hot off the angle grinder.

The sheath is a temporary one, I don't like damaging the cutting edge or cutting myself....

What are your thoughts on the design, good and not so good

I like it, but the only thing I would change would be the end profile of the slabs at the blade end. Maybe chamfer them slightly as they seem too square and final. That's just my personal opinion and therefore may not be worth a damn!!

Saying that though, a lovely looking knife which will look even better once finished. Keep us posted!

Is the copper a covering or a solid piece on the end?
I like the filework, what do you colour the epoxy with?...

The copper is a solid piece 5mm thick, riveted in. I left a bit of the steel blade sticking out at the back, rounded it, drilled the copper then riveted it. Its not coming off in a hurry :D

To colour the epoxy, I'll use pencil lead, 2B I think!! Nice and dark ;)

Actually, Spamel, I agree, I'll give it slight chamfer, although the effect look more accentuated on the photo than in real life. :)

It's a great blade and handle shape, but the handle material is 'orrible :p

You did say it was rough off the anglegrinder, but I think if you use a darker wood such as walnut or ebony, or even a stabilised burl it'll be much better and the copper end will look incredible set against the right wood. Also, you could figure the top of the handle as well, i.e. add a pommel for the heel of the users hand.

The design has great potential to be something really spectacular, so keep working on it!

Birdseye Maple 'orrible  Understated perhaps but 'orrible :lmao: I have got plenty of Rosewood....

Not sure I follow you there, could you elaborate? Do you mean on the outside of the copper end?

Also do you think i could add copper bosters at the front end of the handle. It's not hardened yet so could drill holes for that and move the forward pin back a bit....

I like it. I've seen a number of designs lately that seem to be getting a little smaller, perhaps the best way of putting it is to say "a little more delicate than your average bushy".

I really like the Mahogany handled one that I got from yourself a few weeks back. Great knife. I think I like it for it's beefy feel but I do think there is a place for smaller knives especially for finer work.

Just my 2c.

I suppose that's why I really like making these knives. I can play with ideas and designs, without breaking the bank (important that :D ) There really is not such a thing as a perfect knife for all purposes, although some are more versatile than others. This one is a bit closer to the type of blade used by RM, so I can find out what the fuss is all about :D

Exactly what I was thinking. I wouldn't bother with bolsters though, just chamfer them off a bit.

Just my view, etc

I forgot to say the blade is 4mm thick, so not as delicate as it first appears. The file work makes it look quite thin at the pointy end but that's not really the case. I wanted it to look more delicate than my other knives but to retain strengh as well and the filework helps to do that as well as look good. :)
