Dear uncle Tony,

Can we please have a Ray Mears sub forum in the 'Bushcraft and wilderness library and Media' forum? And making the latter an independible one, rather than a sub forum in the 'Resources' forum?

IMHO I would think this way it'll look a bit more organised.
At the moment we've got 6 threads about RM's new series

In this RM sub forum we can discuss all his series and books, etc.
It also makes a good attention drawer for new members (a lot of them join after they did a search related to a RM series) and prevents several threads running at the same time with the same subject; it furthermore decreases the workload for the mods: they don't need to merge threads together into one thread ;) and last but not least Ray is an inspiration for a lot of people here and is one of the most spoken persons on BCUK.

I hope you have your thoughts about this. If you decide it's not a good idea, I completely understand.

Best regards from your favourite nephew,

Johan

I think it's a great idea. Then I'll be able to avoid it. Ray's a nice bloke and an astute business man, but some people treat him like he's a god and he invented bushcraft.

I think thats true. But he certainly has brought Bushcraft into the public arena, in the same way as Baldrick has for Archaeology, or David Attenborough for world wildlife. So with a seperate Forum some could avoid him and others would more readily know where to find him.

I don't think a separate sub-forum is the answer - moving, merging / locking similar threads by the site mods would do, doesn't take a lot of work.

I agree with everyone, which is a bit fency-sitting of me. A separate space
makes sense to keep things in order (it's probably a bit seasonal though so
might calm down) and I can see that it might reduce the irritation of people
who're finding some of the threads a bit overMearsed.

Then again, a separate forum might annoy too, as I'm sure there are plenty
of other people who've published books etc that we'd all want to hear about
though Ray is probably the most well known. I discovered this place through
googling initially.

I'm hoping my 'vaguely organised list of threads' is going to quietly disappear
down the listings and be discovered (eventually) only on doing a search by
some newcomer.

:)

Why just a sub-forum for Ray Mears, there are plenty of other popular/well known bushcrafters out there. I don't see what's so special about a person that entitles them to have a seperate forum for them. Anything that Ray does fits perfectly well into the existing forums that we have.

There are lots of others, but Mr Mears is the one with enough threads to put on his own sub forum. I think it could be a good idea, as much for people to avoid as people who are more interested.
I don't think he is better(or worse!) than any other writer or instructor, and some threads I enjoy reading and participating in, but it does get a bit much sometimes.
And did we ever get a proper answer to what underwear he uses? :lmao:

I think that it’s going to be a long time away till Ray gets his own forum, sorry to disappoint you nephew :D

The threads just need to be put in the right places. Ray is often the instigator of a subject rather than the subject itself. If it’s kit talk, it goes in kit chatter, if it’s discussing the latest TV programme then it goes in Media, there’s more and more TV stuff that we’re interested in and the conversations about it should go in the media section. If you’re discussing his books then you’re discussing the books, not him. So they should be discussed alongside all the other books.

There’s no getting away fro the fact that Ray is a high profile bloke and that he’s done a huge amount to raise the profile of wilderness skills & crafts, travel, primitive technology, survival etc etc. I’ve great respect for him and I wish him all the best.

If anything to do with Ray was put into one area it would disjoint the forum. People discuss fire lighting techniques that are I his book, there’s no point it being in a ray forum, it’s fire lighting!

It would help a lot if people looked to see if a thread had been started before they start a new one, that was the problem with those listed, many of the comments could all have gone into one thread. I can merge the threads but it might create thread that reads a bit weird! If people see multiple threads appearing all over the place let us know early so that we can sort it out before they get too big. This would also be easier if they were all in the right places for the subjects. WE should have enough subject areas to cover all that’s needed.

One thing I will look at is making the media forum mainstream rather than a sub forum….

So, there’s my thoughts on it! :D

Fair enough!
I assume we can use the red-triangular-with-explanationmark-sign-on-it-button to let you guys know? :p

I'd call that a result :red: :You_Rock_
Great to see when a plan comes together ;)

Is it possible to restrict a search to the thread title? I just did a quick search to
see what actually comes up and of the 25 hits returned on page 1, numbers 16
and 25 related to the new series and many of the others were not obviously
about RM.

So even if people do a search before posting something new (I do try, honest!)
they might not find it because there will be other threads that just happen to
mention the name in passing... for example when I first clicked on this thread
I didn't know what (or who) it was going to be about.

My metathread didn't even make the list of 25 hehe, ah well.

I think it is a case of being more specific in your search terms Jodie. For instance "Ray mears" is going to hit any mention of his name....where as "ray mears wild food" will hit the specific threads regarding the new series.

I'm not overly keen on the search feature either and its a bit hit or miss in my opinion, but thats not anyones fault and would be an administrative nightmare to catalogue each thread as it is posted.

A number of good points there! I can't remember what I searched for initially
(probably just the name) but before that it would have been Google - and
Google is quite good for searching threads here, until I found the clever bit
that allows me to catch up with the threads I posted in

I think I got a bit lost in the Woodlore website (frames... shudder) - fortunately
there are plenty of born cataloguers here putting information about previous
series in order hehe.

Yes, click on search, then advanced search and then the drop down box in the top left corner (under keywords) gives you the opportunity to search via title ;)
