NEW Ray Mears TV series.

Last night my In-laws gave me a copy of their local free newspaper - the Cambourne News or some such. On the bottom of the front page was the banner -
"TV star survives at the Pits"

Along with a couple of pics of our man Ray paddling a canoe and getting ready to look through his binos.

According to the story he was in Cambridgeshire to film for his new series to be called "Wild Foods"
It goes on to say how he filmed at both Paxton Pits and Wicken Fen, and was joined by an ethnobotanist and a chemist.

Something to look forward to at least.

Mr Mears programmes are allways worth looking forward to,well to me atleast.I watch very little tv now and havent done for the last 7 or 8 years as theres pretty much nothing broadcast that I want to watch.

Ray Mears is pretty much unheard of in the States, so I sent "backup copies" to an American friend there. He was knocked out by the shows; he said all the "survival experts" on TV in the States were the gung ho special forces type, but Ray was the real thing. He has since bought copies of his books and DVD's.

Now there is an interesting subject to study, and so much more helpful when you can see the plant in the natural habitat rather than in a book. Will hopefully help me find some of the wild foodstuff on my campsite.

UKTV Food is not free but it is on Topup TV. UKTV History is free and they are showing Ray Mears bushcraft all day Sunday.

I got my parents hooked on his Bushcraft series. Mind you, I prefer Survivorman but that's just me being a Canadian.

Even my girlfriend likes watching 'Chubby' Mears, even if she does take the pee about the fact that he's always eating and 'how many doughnuts are in his rucksack this week?' type stuff... Still, she's learning and likes watching it. Not bad for a 100% Townie. She's even bought a decent pair of walking boots, which is a first for her... 120 pairs of shoes (yes that's right, Emelda Marcos has nothing on her...) and only about 3 she can actually walk in. Now, if only i can get her out of the city and into the green stuff without her moaning about bugs, dirt and all that stuff...

Well I don't know if it's the same series but the BBC rang me up just last week asking for information for the series regarding the use of arum roots for food and, having just briefly run through the process with the research assistant, I asked if I would be 'credited' for my contribution since the 'botanist' didn't seem to be able to provide the answer... In fact I was just about to divulge a very old written source which gave me an insight into preparing the roots safely, and also improving upon the quality of the resulting flour. Nope was the answer. Ahem! However you can see the arum flour extraction process first at:

Have recently processed 3 new batches of arum flour of approx. 135, 25 and 30 gms. weight. Still waiting to dig up a 4th batch of roots from a farmer's field.
