Why is that? I understood that ash is used as a handle material often. It barely grows here so I have no experience with it.I don't think Ash is a good handle material.

This is the very first knife I've ever seen with ash handles, and it's obvious from the pic one of the reasons is the softness and tubules. It's used for pickaxe, axe, adze handles because it's elastic and springy, never seen it on a knife. Why is that? I understood that ash is used as a handle material often. While in a perfect situation you are completely correct and I agree. Why do you have the need to stabb? Unless you stabb you do not need a handguard.
I agree there, being an amateur has little to do with this but I still maintain that having learned early on how to use a puukko in a culture that has used one for a few thousand years might have some effect.I often hear people say that only amateurs need a guard however I think that is a silly misrepresentation of real life situations.

There is nothing that prevents it physically from happening. Sooner or later it is going to happen with enough tries. But it shows that it can happen.
