Hey Guys

I'm in the market for a new bigger rucksack for a week long trip as i dont think my 60ltr is going to cut it! Especially since i'm going to sweden for a week in august i'm going to need to the extra space! Now as usual, i'm not looking for it to cost an arm and a leg! cheaper the better really. And I dont want one I'm going to have to attach the side pockets to like all the military ones. Although I would like it to have side pockets as the 60ltr I have doesn't have any side pockets and just the one in the lid which is a pain, already have a smaller bag so dont need to think about the fact I can take the pockets off and make it a day sack etc. I need a purposeful long weekend - week bag :) I'm 6ft 2 and built like a rake as well so need the bag to fit my long slim physique  I'm thinking the highlander proforce 99ltr rucksack but that's mainly because its one of the cheapest bags i've found at this size and it looks to be quite durable!

what do you guys think?

Cheers

Just thought. As you are paddling does it need to be a rucksack. A army deployment bag is 110l and has rucksack straps for occasional carrying. Cheap as chips or I can lend you one of those too

I've got the Highlander ProForce 88 litre pack and it's a lot of rucksack for the money and reasonably well made.

The straps and buckles and elastic are a little bit less substantial than those on my Karrimor SF 35l pack, and the material may be a bit lighter too, but not to the extent that it gives me any worries that it's not fit for purpose.

The things I don't like about it are probably not specific to this model or range, I suspect it's similar on other ranges too, and that is that the bottom compartment horseshoe shaped zip is always a big struggle to do up, it's not the quality of the zip I don't think, just the curvature of the opening, similarly can be awkward on the side and back pockets. That's just an annoyance though not a major failing.

I am thinking of getting a Karrimor SF 45l plus side pouches, so 70l total, not because I expect to be taking the pouches on and off particularly, but because they are nice and big and easy to get gear in and out of. The pockets on the highlander, and many other makes, are of a size and shape that makes them less useful for me anyway as you can't get much in them except for small odds and sods or a water bottle.

The other reason I'm thinking of changing is that once I've packed the 88l sack it's a real struggle to get it on and off and go anywhere with it due to the weight, but that's probably more about me needing to sort out less/different kit than it is the bag !

Cheers, Paul

If you are going to go with a big pack, you have to chose it carefully. You can get away with a lot of stuff on a small pack, that on a big one will be a huge problem. It has to fit right, and it has to have a frame and hip belt that transfer weight well on your body. A fully loaded 80L pack is heavy. If it does not fit you perfectly, and is not a well designed pack, you will suffer a lot. Go to your local store, load up some packs, and start trying them out. You may end up spending more than you like.

That being said, I would invest my money not in a larger pack, but in smaller "other gear". All my winter gear (down to -20C) and a week worth of food fit in a 40L pack. It can certainly be done with a 60L pack.

For what it's worth, I have a Gregory Palisade 80 (80L pack) that I use when i am big game hunting. It's not cheap, but I like the way it carries the weight.

This is my pro force 99 and I live it good quality for the money and loads of room in it and comfortable
