I have used slate before and it works well for the final polishing of the edge, but I doubt it would be any good it you had a lot of sharpening to do or removing chips from the edge as it is very soft.

Yup that sounds about right for all his stones I think. The prices seem good though compared to say a high grit Japanese waterstone.
