Honestly ? I think we (here, this community, in the UK/ Europe) live in such wealth, such food security (I know about and contribute to the food banks, etc., and I do forage from the traditional famine foods on a regular basis), but I still think there must have been sometime truly dire that folks looked at that lot and tried to eat them.....each to their own.
I have to include rotting soya beans into that though. I like soya, I'm fond of tofu in all it's iterations, but this natto was just a step too much for me.
Food quality isn't what it was or is in terms of nutrients however.
Calorie dense - Yes. Nutrient Poor. -Yes

I live in a country where fresh fruit was so seasonal that we only had jam and apples until they ran out, for most of the year.
I have fresh fruit every single day, multiple fresh fruits :D and vegetables, not just kale and potatoes, carrots and neeps, every single day.

I think quality is a personal choice, even if really watching the pennies.

I'm not saying you or anyone else doesn't have more choice and wide access to different fruits and vegs - I'm saying the nutritional quality of say a Carrot , Tomato has decreased due to modern farming practices.

Unless you can afford to buy organic I think the overall nutritional intake of food has decreased - but I do agree alot comes down to personal choice.

Even buying ‘luxury’ soft fruits, organic apples, bananas and the like my food cost is significantly less than my meat eating family members! Even if a splash out on some tofu it costs less than their meat portion.

They must eat a lot of expensive meat! I don't think my shopping costs less, and I balk at paying some of the organic prices. I shop mainly at Lidl and at the very good, but more expensive, asian supermarket. I buy some white meat, some weeks, but not much.

True, to me those are expensive cuts. I generally stick to legs and wings with better nutrients, only eat breasts if they come as part of a whole cheap chicken or, a cheap bulk buy at Costco/marked down a lot. I got a whole uncooked chicken for 11p last week.
I did lash out on a box of frozen wild deer cuts as a treat (e.g Xmas) last year, and I've some home-butchered roadkill deer, but that will last ages.
My weakness is for chorizo/dried sausage/Spec and Costco bulk buy of either kippers or smoked mackerel, but they last me a month or more.

Y'know ?
It's like frog's legs and chicken feet or octopus.

Those folk must have been so hungry to try eating those :yuck:
I love Octopus! But having said that, I will eat anything if it stays still for long enough. Also absolutely nothing wrong with a Vegetarian or Vegan diet, as long as there are huge chunks of meat with it……Any meat, I ain’t fussy.

For the life of me I cannot imagine what weirdness went through someone's mind when they thought, "I wonder how that tastes ? ", when looking at an octopus. ::sick:

Seriously ? it's like those folks who eat locusts or wriggly grubs.

I know, I know, I've never been starved, but still.

Ah, each to their own, I'm sitting with a bowl of carlins (roasted/fried peas) and quite enjoying the crunch :)

A quick look at a decent sized octopus would show a lot of easy food on offer, I've had it once and it was delicious. I'm not sure I'd eat it again as I don't like eating something that seems more intelligent than me, so I'm mostly vegetarian these days!

Mmmmm, fried peas, sounds delicious………Be great with Octopus, bit of Lemon and a nicely chilled white.
