If it’s been lacking in a typical western diet (presumably for ever) - why the sudden need for it now?
Because empirical longitudinal science studies tend to look at what other societies fare in terms of health and mortality , see where we stand in ours and see if they can work out various commonalities and correlations exist.

I know that people are trying to be helpful here, but it seems from the first post like TeeDee is simply asking about recipes for Natto rather than whether people have an opinion on whether he should want to eat it or not.
True. But that is the nature of forum threads for you.

He did but then linked it to as having the highest level of K2 when asked what it tasted like. The discussion followed that because I had never heard of K2 and was curious as to why a need for it.

This is a discussion forum or does that depend on what is being discussed?

Thats why people get put on Ignore lists. ( Joke - Its fine - I get its a esoteric
subject )

Exactly. Take it or leave it.

All feedback is useful and I assume you'd have just done a search for it if all you wanted was a recipe.

Let us know how it goes, good or bad.

I take extra vit D as I find it helps my eczema-ish skin rashes a lot.... I use a combined D3/K2 supplement liquid. I also use pine tar or birch tar for the skin rash, I had some very stubborn patches and tried basically everything (even steroids) before I saw something on here about remembered that I was prescribed polytar shampoo when I had scalp eczema as a child. That combo mostly controls the rashes (and eases the joint pain).

I like blue cheese and fermented foods, but natto is not something I have tried. I really don't like slimey foods and those with a gelatinous consistency, makes me retch, so I decided to get my K2 (M7( from a pill.

Define balanced diet ? Is yours Balanced? If so how do you know?
If it keeps you going and healthy it is balanced enough I guess. I get what you mean but you do not need more than your body needs. When you add a lot of something above what it needs then what is the point. Sure you are just making sure but really, are you? It goes back to the question, do you have a condition that gives you reason to think you are low in this?

Is your existing diet causing you harm such that you have a K2 deficiency? If so then seeking foods that will remedy that makes sense. It just sounds like you are thinking of something that others think is not very nice just to load up on something you probably have enough of already. That is up to you of course but where is the benefit of something that tastes not very nice when it is likely your body ends up breaking it down and getting rid?

Also, is there a safe upper limit of K2? Some vitamins are kind of toxic in higher concentrations.

I wish you well with your natto and approach, at the end of the day it only matters that you are healthy and enjoy your life. Meet those requirements with natto then great for you. Not sure natto would help me enjoy my life. I like food but not slimy fermented beans as I think someone on here called it.

Looks like there is no recommended upper limit on K2 and no known toxicity though some people apparently can get allergic reactions on large amounts. Apparently it is very hard to get too much from natural sources.

It is not slimy fermented beans it is transparent slime.

Maybe it’s less important than the folk selling the supplements would have you believe.
???
It looks like the amount of K2 in natural foods is such that excessive amounts would require excessive amounts. On the third hand there is little doubt that from supplements it is possible.

Y'know ?
It's like frog's legs and chicken feet or octopus.

Those folk must have been so hungry to try eating those :yuck:
They perhaps were, but there's nothing inherently odd about eating every last possible scrap of the chicken. I remember my brother and me arguing about whose turn it was to get the string off the Sunday roast chicken.

Frogs legs are where the most meat is, on a frog.

What's more odd, eating an octopus or digging up and eating a razor clam?

TeeDee is right, science is now showing that K2 (as distinct from the more common K1) is a very important vitamin, particularly in reducing inflamation in arteries, and absorption of other vitamins.
Modern western diets are now pretty deficient in sources of K2 and many other elements. As it's more of an enabler without direct effects, deficiencies don't have an obvious effect. Unable to remember off hand, but there is also something important about it re calcium in the blood and bone density, for all folk not just veggies.
I'm not pure veggie but as I don't eat red meat I try to compensate with other dietary options.
I also eat a fair bit of Kale and beetroot, and suarkraut, all which I like.
Nettoo though, = Horrible, fermented beans of all types are pretty Yuk! Bean curd is usually ok but not always.

Honestly ? I think we (here, this community, in the UK/ Europe) live in such wealth, such food security (I know about and contribute to the food banks, etc., and I do forage from the traditional famine foods on a regular basis), but I still think there must have been sometime truly dire that folks looked at that lot and tried to eat them.....each to their own.
I have to include rotting soya beans into that though. I like soya, I'm fond of tofu in all it's iterations, but this natto was just a step too much for me.
