My guess might be that you were trying to use it backwards or up-side-down
The SAK type can opener cuts forward and down,
there is another type that cuts on the upstroke.
I'm willing to bet that this is what the NATO type is like.

Ah! no the Brit issue ones are a little different not as nice to look at, and a lot worse to use, the work as a levered piercing tool rather than a moving shear if that makes sense,

You sure that's a British issue set Dave? Only it looks extremely similar, if not the same as the east german sets I have
Yup, probably a nato wide issue matey, I was issued two sets of these and the wifely one, must mean they like me more or she looses less kit

That also looks like a commercial one I have. I never figured out how to do anything with the can opener either. Always just used the one on the SAK or a P38.
ok, looking at it, the blade goes on the inside and the ^ goes over the rim of the can and you want to be pushing it forward (^ bit leading) and pulling upwards to open the can.
Yep... and works well once you get the hang of it....
Used to have something similar at home but it was a waiters version (tin opener, bottle opener and corkscrew) as opposed to a NATO issue one and it worked in the same way.
As good as the tiny P38 is, bayonets were used to open tins instead. The army likes you to have at least one tin opener, either on your jackknife/leather/gerber or with your issue kfs. Wonder how many soldiers actually open tinned compo these days.
I've seen bayonets used in the movies but in real life (where only infantry troops even get issued a bayonet) I've never seen a GI use anything other than a P38 (at least not back when tinned rations were issued; i.e. C-Rats) One was included in every box of C-rats and the 1st one you ever received was always put on the neck chain with your dog tags and the second one on your key ring so that you always had 2 back-ups. After the switch to soft pack rations (MREs) and the advent of pull top civvie tins, they have gradually disspeared (or nearly so)

LOL. Love it.
I got used to the P38 quickly enough but the larger handle on the SAK makes it so much easier for me.
