Well, last weekend at my parent's I found this languishing on a shelf. It's a Wenger SAK, originally purchased for my brother, and later handed down to me.

It's probably about 17/18 years old, and I remember it returning in my brother's bag from a trip to the World Scout Jamboree in Korea 1991 being covered in suntan lotion after a bottle burst.

What I hadn't remembered was that it must have had something nasty, probably bug juice, spilled on it at the same time - because it appears to have melted in places.

Anyway after looking it over and ivin a quick sharpen I got to thinking about the possibility of replacing the scales and putting it back into service - having only one blade I thought it might be handy on my neck lanyard, on which I usually carry a firesteel and striker and a small compass.

I realised that I haven't seen one with pins all the way through before.

So what I'm wondering now is if I was to rescale it - how would I have to go about getting the scales off with these pins in them?

Anyone have any ideas?

:D I agree with him

A new SAK is so cheap, you might as well get a new one to try.

I would ask dunc5 if he can let you know anything about that SAK. Might be of value to collectors :D

Haha I had been thinking about leaving it in its 'original' state as well.

More than anything I was wondering how I would go about removing and replacing the pins etc.

I might post it up on britishblades as well, see what them lot think

You should leave it "as is" because it obviously has a story to tell! I still have my very first SAK sitting in my closet here at home, my Father gave it to me when I was six years old. It holds some very special memories for me as I'm sure your SAK does for you.

Needless to say, it's a beauty of a knife even if it's just a bit uhh...melted! :D
