Here's my first kuksa out of maple. I tried to copy Jon Mac's style for the cup.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

now that's really good for a first effort. beautiful grain to that maple, i might have to have a look around for a piece to have a play with

Thats a beautiful piece of work. To me it has a beaver tail look to that handle. It also looks like oak rather than maple to me too.

Do you guys think that because of the color? If so, it that dark because it was a little wet from the snow.

It's the grain, Maple is very creamy and the growth rings are subtle as its a diffuse porous wood. Oak has the distinct madullary rays and is ring porous, (you can see tiny holes in the annual growth rings). If you google the above terms you should get some good pics.
To be honest though i know a bit of oak when i see it.
