This is my first attempt at carving a spoon, its made of silver birch using only a pen knife. What do you guys think? Any tips or ideas on how to improve/make it easier next time? (Apart from getting myself a hook knife that is lol)

honest to god ive never done this before all you guys on here opened my eyes to different aspects of bushcraft ie carving. So i thought i,d give it a go all be it i may of struggled doing it with a straight blade .i got the finish smoothed by rubbing the edge of my blade back n forth so no sanding at all.

Excellent first effort!
Mine has long since gone on the fire where it was much more useful :campfire:
If you are going to do more spoons and bowls you may want to get a spoon knife.
The Mora ones are around £20 but do need alot of work to make them good to carve with.
Have a look at the sharpening tutorials on here and also the one by Nic Westermann on his website.
It's worth getting the knife sharp & shiny as you will cut yourself less with a sharp one.
When you are truly addicted you will want a better spoon knife from Nic or Ben Orford , Dave Budd , among others.
Good luck with it.
Cheers , Simon

rancid badger

Bushcrafter (boy, I've got a lot to say!)
You need a hook....oh buxxer!

seriously though, very nicely done.

You might want to consider not only a hook knife but a dedicated carving knife too?

The Frost's 106 is particularly good:), though I wouldn't recommend their hook knives:(

good luck and keep them coming

best wishes

Steve

very nice esp as you say you have not sanded it yet .
I'd get some linseed oil on it once sanded to bring out the grain .
Also it will look after the wood .
here are a few good sites for some knives
