my boy made a knife today!

Ollie went up to Robin's workshop and firstly did a bit of metal bashing ...

then some grinding

Robin found a bit of yew for the handle and stuck it on, then Ollie whittled it to shape

and the finished knife

Great to see kids learning skills like this , My son Sam sits on my knee bashing things in the workshop he has quite an arm on him for for 16 months old

My son taught forging and knife making at the Boy Scout camp this week. It was his last week of six there this summer. Next week he's leaving for a 10 day canoe trip in Canada.

I miss him.

What's the edge like?

He did it on the Tormek and Robin set the jig up for him so it feels pretty good. So far he's only used it for cutting pitta breads, but I'm sure he'll do some whittling today to try it out. Next he's going to bother his sister into teaching him how to make a sheath.

Sure am...we have fun together. It can be hard work when self employed juggling work and "childcare" through the holidays but this was fun. It only took him a couple of hours to make the blade then we spent the afternoon out in the woods me working on a bridge
Ollie building sculptures in the stream as soon as we got home he was whittling away.
