Musty water bottles

How do you get rid of the plastic/musty smell of plastic bottles? I've got a few old ones that are good for carrying water or various cooking supplies but they smell quite a bit. I'm sure they need more than a good soak in hot water. Any recommendations?

Also do people prefer plastic or aluminium drinking bottles?

I've used a few things over the years including:

Milton fluid
Home brew sterilising tablets

But these days I use bicarb of soda. Just fill the bottle with hot water, add a few tea spoons of bicarb and leave for a few hours. Rinse, then leave to dry...no chemical after taste, just a clean bottle.

boil the kettle plop in a dishwasher tablet add boiling water leave in the sink and it will bubble over come out a treat works particularly well with mouldy stainless steel flasks too. Just rinse well after they are cleaned

bicarb and store bottles with lids off.

also sterident, its basically bicarb with some other germ killing agents and makes it minty fresh

I 7th the bicarb but I do add a bit of rock salt to act as an abrasive.
