Maglite LED

Having depated for some time I'm planning on getting a LED replacement bulb for my AA Maglite, has anyone found a cheap supplier (best I've got yet is £14.99 )(7 DayShop) Has anyone tried these (my torch is compatible apparently), are they worth it?

Hi Jim,
That's as cheap as I've seen them. It's where I bought mine from, in fact and the service was good.
As for whether they're worth it or not... :super: most definitely, especially if you already have a compatible Mag.
I wouldn't hesitate to get another if I lost this one and certainly wouldn't think of changing back to the stock minimag bulb.

I bought a Lucido lightwave about 2 years ago, I have yet to change the batteries in it even though it travels with me everytime I am in the field.

It is not the only torch that I take with me, I also use two single LED torches, one attached to the drawcord on the snowcape of my Bergan and one on the Zip of my jacket and they get a fair amount of use, but the lightwave is still running.

I'll give a second thumbs up to the Lucido Lightwave :biggthump It was about 2 years before I had to replace the batts too ... and it was well used!

You'll like the Opalec Newbeam. Mine see more use than any other of my lights - including the Surefire E2E/KL4.
The light level is perfect for personal admin tasks, not TOO bright.

Seconded - it's well worth it. And it's very efficient. You can get a couple of hours light out of batteries that seem dead in lots of other electonic gizmo's.

Dumb question coming up... but how can you tell if your Mag is compatible to be converted to LED instead of Krypton bulb?

I've got a few - Solitaire, AA and 3D that I wouldn't mind converting. How much does it improve battery life? What does it involve?

Hi Nick,
Sadly, the Newbeam is only made to fit the AA minimag. Compatibility is related to the age of the mag, older models having a different switch unit:

As you'll see from this link and the one from Steven, fitting it is a breeze and you'll get 10 hours of non dimming light followed by many more hours of useful light after the unit drops out of regulation.
There are other options for converting your 3 cell mag, namely

It's not particularly bright, bright enough but not stunning. What is stunning is the runtime - the last forever. I tested mine just for giggles, it lasted nearly a week constantly on with 1 set of batteries. Admittedly when it finally failed, it was very dim but we are talking of about 130 hours of useful light output. Amazing.
