... go out in the mid day sun. No idea what this fella was thinking. I found him puffed up and warding off a grass snake who lost interest after he successfully fooled her into thinking he was twice the size.

It's really cool behaviour. The toad on seeing the snake will puff itself up and stand on tiptoe. As the snake moves around the toad investigating, the toad angles itself so the snake always thinks it is bigger than expected and too big to eat. Doesn't always work mind.

Toads walk rather than jump, am I right in thinking that? So I suppose escape isn't really an option.

Yeah, their daft little back legs can't propel them very far, hardly their own body length.
