lowa mountain or Meindl Army Gore Mountain Boots

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Always liked the look and feel of the lowa but never got around to buying a pair because I have a perfectly servicable pair of Scarpa boots with yeti gaiters that I wear from time to time.
Many forces colleagues had the Lowa and they were very happy with them, both are a very good make though.
Just from personal experience but try and stay away from a goretex lining unless you are going to be in very wet conditions over a long period.
My reasons are:
1. If you waterproof the leather the goretex does not breath so well.
2. In freezing conditions the goretex does not work so well if the wet leather is frozen.
3. If you get water inside the lining it takes for ever to dry out.
4. The goretex lining will wear out long before the leather uppers and it either condenses in side or gets holes and is uncomfortable to wear.
5. Goretex in the summer cause hot sweaty feet, blisters and athletes foot at best.

If you want a versatile system then get a leather boot and wear sealskins in wet conditions. A good leather boot will last you ages and the sealskins can be replaced as they wear out. Lowa offer both options and I still lust after a pair of their all leather mountain boot.

As usual, these are my opinion based on my own experiences. Others will offer their opinions that may well differ.
Hope this helps.

Ive got a pair of Lowa mountain boots, gortex lined, really great boots, good support, and very water proof, i walked down from the Old man of Coniston in them when the path was a river, ankle deep, and my feet where dry the whole time, have to agree with robadams though, ive had gore lined boots before and it does eventually wear our, plus like he says get water inside and i takes an age to dry.Still damn good boots though.

Can't offer an opinion on the Meindles but I have had a pair of Lowa mountain boots for three years now and they are excellent for keeping your feet dry and warm, in wet, cold conditions.

Where they fail, quite badly, is on ice. They are not very good at all, on any slippy surface.Great on millstone grit or other rough surfaces or in woodland, sand, general conditions.

I have a pair of 10 year old, Scarpa Manta's, classed as "3-4" season when I bought them, which are much safer than the Lowa mountain boot in slippery conditions.

So it just depends on where and when you want to use them.
cheers

I have a pair of Lowa super camps, very good boots, leather lined (no goretex) ive used them in Norway and in the uk on extended treks, they are now 5 years old and still look new, must have done over 2000 miles now, never leaked, never given me a blister. bought on ebay for £80. I would have these boots time and time agian 10 out of 10.
I have replaced the insoles in them as the first pair wore out after about 1500 miles, yeti gaiters fit them perfectly, overall best boots i've ever had.

lowas are great, apart from the grip issue on wet rock, i'm going the lakes this weekend and will be wearing my mantas for any scrambling.

great boots for walking the woods though
