Castleford, West Yorkshire
Sunday evening chiseller and I had a recce of local woodland in castleford. This was a quick recce so didn't get chance to explore everything.
first port of call was Well Wood. Or should that be, local fly tip, dodgy allotment, death trap. The area was surrounded by damaged wire fencing. A large portion had dangerous shards of steel posts left about 8 inch high with sharp edges. Other areas had rolls of razor wire right beside the footpath.
Absolutely dreadful.

We didn't hold out much hope for the next woodland on the list. Wynn Covert. Again, the first 50 yards was a fly tip (being so close to a housing estate), however after that. Wow. What a place. Its a shame we were limited by time. There was a plethora of fungi, old trees, beautiful fauna, ground ivy and a strange metallic looking fungus.

I am always in awe of chisellers vast knowledge on these matters!

There was at sometime in history a stately home on the grounds, judging by the diverse species of trees, and possibly the biggest cherry tree ever!

Close by is a potato field, and strange islands of woodland yet to be explored by us.

This is a lovely woodland and cannot wait to explore the whole area.

I imagine it'd be a good place for that too. I've heard that there's a spot with fallen pine. Fat wood! Also heard this IS the place where a certain supermarket have been cultivating certain chalky soil dwelling fungi.

Had a quick walk through a while back, first woods I've seen that isn't full of rubbish round here.

Could the strange tree islands be left because they have protected trees in them? not much knowledge on this type of thing, just seems strange that there left uncultivated.

Can anyone else see a boot?

Might have another look round next week.

The potato field with the 'tree islands' was parkland, part of the Fryston Hall eastate. Fryston Hall (demolished 1934) was situated close to Fryston Hall Farm at the Eastern end of the woods. Apparently only the stables remain of the Hall buildings. The stone from the hall was used to build a local church.

I had a walk in both of the woods today and i must say i am in complete agreement with you whin covert is a stunning place its suprisingly large where did you find the fungus at what point did you enter the wood id like to go out and look myself cheers
