By protected I mean a over charge/over discharge protection circuit. I have some that are, and some that are not. I know the difference based on the colour of the shrink wrapping on the cells, but the newer cells have different colours!!

Not sure but i thought the charger did all that so that you couldn't overcharge them.
I use the same make batteries as the charger,hopefuly this is the right thing to do .
