How bad are they normally early (first week) of September?

Im off to Harris on Thursday so will let you know! Seriously I was in Torridon last weekend and they were awful, im guessing it will be the same on the Islands.
Last year I camped at Seilebost and they were ok, the campsite being on the sea front. Harris is more rocky and mountainous then Lewis so it maybe worth heading down there?

If its not blowing a gale, September is the very worst month. Best stock up on skin so soft or invest in a midge headnet.

I heard that from a friend's missus who comes from Lewis, too.
I got a Beaton's midgie jacket for my birthday last week........Yessss!

Another vote for the Beaton jacket here, worth getting one Ed as they don't weigh anything, pack down tiny and can mean the difference between total misery and more of a bearable irritation.
