Can anyone advise me on what type and size of leather thong to get for a firebow. I was trying to start a fire today using paracord in the bow, but it kept on breaking and the fire never started, though I got close, I did I did. Any input would be gratefully recieved.................Jon

I've used the square leather bootlaces for bowdrilling. They're about 3mm thick and square shaped from the end view. They work but I prefer paracord.

You prefer paracord!!!!!!!!!! How come it kept on breaking on me? I was not using the cheap stuff and I used two different types, both were breaking in just a short time...............Jon

Jon he is not the only one.

I don't use Paracord, but something similair in look but I find it a lot better quality and far more robust and that is climbing accessory cord (I can never remember whether it was spectra or dyneema that I bought).

If you are after leather for a firebow cord then you can get them HERE look down at the bottom of the page, it also gives the dimensions of the cord itself.

Leon..........Thanks for that link and advise. I had searched the old threads and found leather suppliers, but I just did not know what to ask for, so to have a link straight to the right tool for the job is great. I also want to experiment with starter cord as that is stronger than paracord, but I feel it will slip on the drill, like paracord does.................Jon

Jon, you can get around cord slipping, by making the bow string a little shorter thus increasing the tension, if you are putting a lot of weight onto it reduce it a little or you could try the Egyptian bow drill.

Egyptian Bow Drill will stop the cord from slipping and reduce the wear and tear on the cord, the downside is you will require a longer piece of cord. :)

I had the bow string very tight, but it was quite long in length, so I will try a shorter bow. As for pressure, I could not put down too much because the cord would slip so much. I will look into an Egyptian bow drill.
Thanks...............Jon

Thanks...............Jon

How much give was there in the bow, that could be the other culprit.

Oo er.......I suppose there could of been a bit, it was green hazel about 1" thick. What does work best..................Jon

The diameter isn't really that important as long as the bow is sufficiently rigid. Green wood normally is nice and springy so as you push on it the cord slips, Standing dead wood is pretty good and if you can get on with it then possibly better if using a straight bow.

I think I can now see the problem I was having, with a long bow and it being green wood caused the string to slip, which in turn caused it to break. Thanks for your advise Leon. I have also ordered a couple of leather thongs from that link you gave me. I shall go out there and practise practise practise.
Cheers................Jon

No problems Jon, it was good to see you at the Dartmoor Meet:)

If I get to a meet that you will be at I'll bring some of the cord that I use for you to have a play with, it's good kit:)

Leon.........It was good to meet you too, I shall look forward to our next meet. Are you going to the Christmas meet at Dartmoor ?

If you get yourself a plastic thong cutter from Le Prevo leathers and some scrap leather (coats, bags etc,) from charity shops you can make miles of thong. Then if you tie a round plait (lariat plait) it'll work well on your fire bow.
