leather sheath for bowi

i was commissioned to make a leather sheath for very own biker, of this parish, now this is a little special as this was passed down to hime by his father who sadly passed away, he cut his finger on this knife when he was a little boy, and has a lot of sentimental value to him, so i wanted toi make something a little special for him, we bounced a few ideas over for quite a while and i tried to steer him down this rout as its a lovely knife, and in the end he gave me free rain on this, and i love it when a customer gives me that sometimes.
he also sent me the existing sheath with this, and asked for me to incorporate it in the new sheath, as then the old sheath that it has lived in all these years would always be with the knife.
so what i done i put an inlay of the sheath i with the new one, and made a frog out of the rest to complement the sheath, now on this particular knife the handle shape is very different to most and a sheath makers knight mate as it very uniform and quite fat, there is no guard, so i could not put a retention strap across the front and he did not want a strap that wrapped around the middle of the handle, so with this in mind of i went to the drawing board, to see what i could come up with, i made the retention strap for it, so that it is elasticated and just slips over the top, which works like a dream and something very different that i had not seen before.
i also made him a little toggle for the frog out of some giraff bone.

I would have seen this last night but I went out instead with a mate to see a band and knowing this would be posted Thursday night resisted looking online until this morning, savouring the anticipation

I've been sat here looking back over the pix and seeing little details and really really like it bud. Love it in fact, can't wait to get my hands on it!

Can't believe I finally have a LuckyLee sheath!

For you knife techys out there that knife's a Solingen Monarch, as Lee said I can remember cutting my finger on this when I was about 7 or so (I'm now 50) and I shouldn't have been messing about with that as it was one of those strictly out of bounds areas of my childhood, but for some reason Dad had left it within reach and like any inquisitive child I had to look... with my hands. Ineviatbly I cut myself but not badly, just enough to draw blood, however, I think this was one of the few times I didn't run to Mum for a plaster, the guilt was too much.

Anyway time passed on and Dad sadly died at the age of 45 back in '84 and I inherited the knife back then, but let it untouched stll with the patina on the blade and the dodgy pommel that worked loose all the time. A couple of year ago I took on the project to make it smarten it up and sharpen up the blade.

Pretty soon it was all nicely done but the sheath really let it down. The natrual thing to do was have Lee make something suitably WOW for it. And Lee, you've done that with rare skill!

Thank you so much! Really pleased with it and my Dad would be well chuffed too.

Nearly in tears here Lee, that is beautiful..........All your sheaths have something special but I think that's your best yet.....a stroke of genius inlaying a part of the old sheath, absolutely amazing & that laced frog(?) gives it a little steampunky-ness, which I'm sure Biker will like.

It's getting sent to my parents place in the UK first for eventual collection. Won't risk it going adrift in transit to here. But yeah no probs. I'll be over with it sometime soon and proudly show that off.

Like it? I LOVE IT!!!

Thelaced frg was my idea, figuring that could me made out of the original sheath. Lee's inspired idea of the insert came 100% from him. We did thrash out some ideas back and forth and I can't fault Lee for his enthusiasm or passion, he really does love his work and you can see that in the workmanship of anything he does. The Frog didn't look as though it'd happen but I had a PM late on Wednesday night say it could be a possibility, so imagine my grin at seeing it in the pix above.

Thanks for your comments Blacktimberwolf, choked me up a bit to see this too given the history of it. I'm just so glad I got something of my Father's that ticks all the boxes for me, rather than a pair of his old socks or something. . I recently aquired his old wallet too and that's become a user. Maybe this sounds a bit unhealthy turning things my Dad once owned as some sort of personal shrine. Trust me it's not, but rather than them sitting in some drawer someplace the wallet is seeing use again and that knife has a very VERY posh overcoat, with something of the old one still with it.

That'll work out just fine mate they are on the way to my old workshop in Old Wives Lees a mile from Chartham where the joinery boys that took it over have some stuff for me, e-mail me with some details.
