I've been reading the book 'Weather For Hillwalkers And Climbers' by Malcolm Thomas and finding it really interesting and about an hour and a half ago we had one hell of a thunderstorm and very heavy rain pass through Pontypridd. To the south of the UK there is a depression moving North. I'm guessing the thunderstorm was the cold front? I'm almost certain that in the past half hour I have felt a drop in temperature. I couldn't find any threads on weather but I'm sure there's others here interested and knowledgeable on weather?

Would you say this is Stratocumulus? To my untrained eye the clouds look low altitude. I can't make out any Cumulonimbus.

In a long lifetime I have seen the TV weather forecast go from cardboard cut outs moved by the presenter to what we have today.

Somewhere down the line they used to show satellite pictures of the sky above Britain. For me, this was the simplest way to present information and I could develop my own forecast from that as long as I was sure of wind direction and speed.

I’m told that they stopped doing that because the photographs included some military activity. Dunno how tries that is.

I'm struggling to find a live interactive weather map that has isobars and fronts. Like the Met Office, but the Met Office isn't an interactive map i.e you can't move the position of the map around etc.

Can someone move the world round so that Devils Bridge isn’t right under a cloud burst as we are trying to pitch tomorrow!

Thunderstorms dont work on warm or cold fronts per se... its to do with pressure... Where high meets low. It takes 2 to tango. Though temp plays a major role in the pressure. So while almost correct, its not quite that simple. You can have differing pressure fronts collide, yet no storm. There are subtleties to it...how much pressure?, how much temp difference....(less of a factor)... The topography of the land matters, is air forced upwards or downwards... is it allowed to collide head on etc...The best storms are over the oceans or the American plains where they dont get interrupted by up or down draughts so much. This kind of situation allows the two to properly Tango.
