I realise it is a cup/ bowl with a wee handle but what makes it a kuksa?

I made one this morning but with no tools i burned out the concavity and made the wee finger hole with a bowdrill.
No pics as i don't have a camera.
Also is it safe to use? The bowl is black but i rubbed ash in to clear the worst out then donked it in the river a few times.
