Having been very inspired for quite some time now by various posts by Rapidboy,Shinken and others I was wondering if anyone does courses in Knife making and the related skills that go with them?Anyone know of any courses???

although you said you wanted to go on a course, you could do as I did (probably foolishly) and dive straight in. As long as you don't mind making a couple of poor ones to begin with and put the time and effort in, you can quite soon achieve good results with both the knife and sheath making. There is a lot of helpful stuff here and on BB that I reccomend reading beforehand though. Also this could be an intersting read if you arelooking for something more low budget - http://www.primitiveways.com/pt-knives-1.html

There are tutorials all over the place, there is even one on Brisa.

Look up Green Pete's site he has a good tutorial there and there are a couple of tutorials over here and on BB for making a scandi.

This thread was started by red collective and we ended up discussing how we had put together scandi type knives it also has pictures of homemade knife vices so that would be a reasonable place to start.

Clem,
Where in the midlands are you? There is a shop in the west midlands that has a few blades, handle blocks etc, that would get you started. Cost would be under £15, and would only require minimal tools. In fact, you could make a knife on the kitchen table!

Id second Green Petes tutorial, it really inspired me to give it a go. You can get started with very little, a couple of files and a hacksaw. Some articles I've read recommend getting a softer bit of metal and get the hang of shaping it and some cheap wood as a full scale model or test piece. you can get all the angles and the feel for the tools, The first knife I tried was out of a bit of metal found at the side of the road, wood scales from a bit of branch. It's cuts ok, and I still use it, but it was to get the hang of things before buying a "good" bit of 01 steel.

An alternative would be the Different Ideas 3 thread on BB. I think there are still places open at the moment - Dave Barker is tutoring people through making a knife. He provides everything you need including instructions, and you have him available on BB for advice throughout. Doesn't cost much either - just the materials themselves. :)

Funniest thing (Well from my POV anyway) is that we set off for a week of rock climbing the next day. At least he had one big hand for doing hand-jams!
