What?
A government do something that is sensible?
When it legislates for the wearing of safety helmets to avoid head injuries from flying pigs maybe!
The country keeps on voting for idiots coz only the deranged want all that lovely power, all to themselves, power, Itell you POWER!
Anyone who is half way sane realizes that running a country is too much like hard work, the berks who only see the power stand and win seats - and end up running the country - into the ground.
Just look at them......
Sane?
Look at the laws....
Logical?
Look at the education and laws about knives...
Responsible?
Get out there and teach people to think, teach them that knives are tools - just like politicians realy.....has power to do good or harm, depending on who controls them, lose control and you get mayhem!
Rant over...
I thank you.

Continuum concept parenting, the goverment, and teachers.

You give birth, the baby cries because its hungry. So the midwife tells you your milk is not good enough so you should bottle feed. The child wakes up in the night so the health visitor tells you to leave it to cry in another room. The child throws a tantrum and the government gives you advice on behaviour management. You send the child to school to be taught by people that went to school, went to uni, and then worked in schools. These people tell you all about broadening your childs education.

Why do these people think they know so much about raising children?

This government is killing our children with targets. Boys are been seriously failed by the health and safety culture, that leaves no room for danger.

My seven year old whittles, has a his own knife. His sister was taught to use a chisel when she was four. Yes it is frightening seeing children use sharp tools. But children aren't stupid and will follow instructions if they sense danger or responcibility. Considering I have been in carpentry workshop with young offenders, the most corrupted kid in the country can think that sharps are tools.

Some adults have minds too closed to be taught anything.

I agree 100% with what you are saying here, i personally think that rather than using one concept for raising children, pick and choose from many different ideas's (so long as they do not compromise each other) and use what you feel is right. I liked a lot of the Continuum concept, but i also think Doc Spock had a lot of good things to say. If you can educate, then surely thats better than scaring someone into avoiding a tool that is an inanimate object.

Exactly, Dad, as another Dad I agree with you.

I will make an observation about children and self endangerment - whilst I studied IT I read a lot of psychological texts because of the nature of the IT I was doing and stumbled across some interesting things - psychology is actually common sense but it needs to be pointed out to you(I have a mate who would disagree).

No one puts themselves into a situation they do not think they can get out of, it is basic human self-preservation instinct. I cannot rememeber the name of the research, but anyway, it allowed children the opportunity to put themselves into [controlled] situations that were to them potentially dangerous.

There were cautious children, brave children and stupid children. They either did not get into the engineered situation or they got in thinking they could get out. The upshot being, if you guide them and teach them well, they will understand their limits and progress safely beyond those limits.
