Kid's Knife

Ok - I've been thinking about this for a while and I reckon it's time that my son got his first knife.

he's going to be six next month and he already has his own fire steel, he uses one of my knives now ( under supervision of course) but I reckon that he's learned enough to get his own to use when he's out with me.

I'm looking for something with a small handle, a short blade and a reasonably large guard to stop his hand slipping on to the blade. I'm not interested in a folding knife (neither is he!) but I'd prefer something a bit "traditional".

I remember my first knife was a "scout model" of some sort and it fitted my criteria nicely but I can't seem to find anything suitable.

Any ideas?

I read somwhere about a kids scandi that had a removable guard.
When the child learns to handle it you can remove it.
The little red handled Frost/Mora possibly.

the scout knife was made by Reh Cooper and the disributer was mortons, both of which are in sheffield. if you send me a PM I'll get you mortons number and you can ring up and find out.

the red handled mora knife to me would sem to suit a yunger person as the handles aren't very big (too small for me) but they dont have a guard. you may be able to make some sort of guard for it though

I'd go for a Frost Mora ... In fact, I have young ones that use them. It has just enough of a guard to prevent accident but no enough that they learn to rely on it (a real mistake). I've never found that hand slippage onto the blade is much of a problem anyway.

Frosts Mora's are a great knife for small hands. Keep em nice and sharp too, It's blunt blades that tend to cut finger due to slippage

About a month ago I bought a knife for my son for his birthday - he was nine.

It's handmade by Dave Barker based in Norway (he contributes here and on BB I think)

Lovely little knife, small handle and the blade doesn't have a sharp point, the edge goes up to within about 1/2 an inch from the tip then stops.

My son loves it, he's already made a load of feather sticks so then we had to get a fire going (they were better ones than in the picture Tony posted!).

The handle is made from Linden Burl (Big Leaf Lime) and the blade is san mai. which is a three layer laminated blade. High carbon on
the inside and softer steel on the outside. The handle is coloured red, yellow and orange as is the sheath.

There was another thread a while ago that had a picture, I did have a picture Dave sent me but I can't find it at the moment. I'll see if I can find the thread and I may be able to post a picture if I can figure out how to do it.

I don't think the link for the BCUK thread is working properly but it does link to BB OK.

There is a picture of one on BB but the one Michael (my son) has is much brighter in colour, it makes it harder to loose !

my 9 year old daughter is using a fallkniven wm1 it is a fine small knife for a child and has a good guard it is very well made and can take a lot of abuse
