My missus, has the life of Reilly, she is a teaching assistant at our local primary school, and not only gets to escort the kids to Forest School every Friday, today she got paid to take 30 of the little blighters up to Bellever, and take them on a walk, coach arrived there at 10.00am, and the walk finished at 1.00pm! Not bad for a bunch of 9 year olds! Most of them loved it, only three threw up and only one burst into tears, good old character building!
For obvious, stupid modern laws, we cannot show any pics of the kids enjoying the experience, good old 21st century madness, or name the school, even the coach operator, but here are the pics of where they went, oh yeah and after lunch they made beeswax candles to take home.

Enjoy.

Ah well, at least she's having fun (my misses used to say that when I was a forester that I had too perfect a lifestyle - so I told her that she brought balance into my life!).

Looks a nice place, any more info on pics 008, 018 & 019?

We've a couple of forest schools around here and some of the local mums and dads have got permission to use some of the estate woods 'round here for after school activities.

ATB,
Colin.

Hi Colin, pic 8 was lunch stop, and not sure pal, 18 is a 4000 year old burial chamber, and if you look from the chamber away there is a stone line that appears to lead all the way to Haytor, and i have not found the answer why, sorry i could not give you a more definitve answer, call myself a Dartmoorite!

Pic 17, is the site of a medieval farmstead, which has only recently been found, and is still under excavation, you can quite clearly see the crescent shape, now they have started work.

It's cool Ivan, just have a big interest in old monuments and stones. And I wasn't sure how old or what 008 was, it looks interesting though. Lucky enough to have a fair few old monuments 'round my way, though reading some of the old antiquarian documents it's amazing how many were torn apart and destroyed within the last couple of hundred years which breaks my heart.

Cheers for getting back to me though.

Hope all is improving,
Colin.

found this that may interest you .http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/Hay_tor.htm
The first mention of the tor was in 1566 when it was called Idertordoune, in a deed of 1687 the name was Ittor Doune and in the recovery rolls of 1762 and 1789 the name was Eator Down and Itterdown respectively. It is suggested that the modern place-name is corrupt and probably was influenced by the nearby hundred of Haytor with which there is no connection, Gover et al, 1998, p.476 and 505. Other moorland names for the tor are: Athur tor, Solar tor, High tor and Hey tor. Crossing considers that Athur tor was derived from Solar tor which an early writer supposed was a place where sacrifices and offerings were made to the Sun God 'Bal'.

I do the same a lot Ivan except the the getting paid bit and I love it it amazes me how even the kids who apparently struggle to keep attention in class stick to you like little sponges

And surrounding myself with 10 year olds means we are all on the same wavelength

And it really frustrates me that we are not allowed to photograph the trips it's very rare now that I see the teachers taking pics because of the regulations they have to follow , very sad
