just fitted a straight grained hickory shaft,i wet fitted it so leaving it to dry now then i'll trim the top and then give it a coat of danish.

The cutting disc is so thin it generates very little heat,theres more heat generated putting an edge on the blade so water is essential whilst sharpening.

That's a rather clever idea, and a rather stunning axe
I soaked the wedge and shaft before fitting together,makes the wood swell for a tight fit.

What do you mean by 'wet fitted'?
With respect, shouldn't it be as dry as possible? When your handle will shrink and become loose...
with the wood being wet its is more plyable when knocking the wedge in.i tried another handle dry and ended up splitting it 24 hours later its solid in the head.im very pleased with the fit.
tomorrow i will trim the shaft at the top and danish oil it up.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but do you saw a slot in the handle for the wedge before you fit it?
