Hi all,

A friend of mine is getting into making her own jewellery and I've been trying to help her out.

I'm keeping an eye out on ebay for a nice little anvil for her though if nothing comes up I'll just make one up.

I was wandering if anyone on here makes their own stuff and if so what sort of tools you use? - so I have an idea what to watch for.

Cheers

pretty much all of the jewelry 've done has been made with the same tools I use for everything else, just hit things less hard ;)

Mostly smaller pliers, hammers and punches. Some are just improvisd from nails at the time, but I'm sure a rummage around carboots for small tools will yield a range of modifiable tools. There are some specialised jewelers tools that would make life easier, but I don't do enough of it to bother buying/making them  A lot of it will depend on what sort of jewelry making she is doing? some will get away with metal clay, some thin wire to make holes and a small pair of round nosed pliers; others will want rolling mills, wire drawers, chasing hammers, etc, etc

How small?

I've had this for ages, I'm not sure if it is just an ornament:confused:

It has one broken foot, but if it is of use to you you are welcome to it?

Ive dabbled a bit..The tools i used the most was a small ball pien hammer, a selection of needle files, various small pliers like needlenose type and side cutters.
Will your friend be doing stuff like soldering ect?Thats when it gets into a world of flux, pickles and annealing!:)

Cheers lads - I'm not sure what she is after exactly but something along the lines of small pliers etc will be useful to her I'm sure.

I'll keep an eye out.

Grebby - you have a PM mate - very kind offer.

All the best

My wife did it for a whileand although interesting its harder to make a living from it than some people think.
There's a hell of a lot of hobbyists doing it that are willing to sell stuff without making money on their time.

I'm willing to bet that knifemaking is the same that way.

I buy my gas oxy-butane gases from Proops brothers. They have jewellery anvils here.

I have several different sets of pliers, one with nylon jaws; a couple of sets of self gripping tweezers and a couple of marlin spikes. I do wire jewellery, so have quite a specific tool kit that probably doesn't overlap much with other techniques.
