I've a smaller version of that type of can opener. It's a variation on the type patented by Lyman in 1870 in the US. At that time the cans had small holes in the centre of the lids to let the steam out while the cans were being boiled to sterilise them which they filled with a blob of solder to seal it so it wasn't hard to piece the lid with the rather wimpy point.

Now that explains a lot, thanks for posting it.

I should have possibly explained why I called this thread Jack Hargreaves to some members.

Jack Hargreaves was an old bloke who did a TV programme called Out of Town when I was a kid.
The programme showed footage of old country practices and one section of it was shot in what looked like a shed where he picked up some totally random looking tool then explained what it did.
Her he is describing..
minnow trap
Some different horseshoes
Talking about his camera man.

Problem was that I intended to put some part in the title asking "what does this item do" as well as the Jack Hargreaves reference but numpty that I am I forgot and just pressed the Submit button.

What's mildly wired is I picked up a boxed set of Out of Town in a charity shop and we are in the middle of watching it. After 3 or 4 episodes the tune has melted the kids brain and insist I stop....

A brilliant series and very honest in a way you don't get now, what with PC.
