Is there a general thread running that has suggestions for 'basic equipment' such as backpacks, tents, cooking stoves, that kind of thing - not a subjective 'this is the best'
More these are popular brands / models from this maker that are widely used / well liked that kind of thing ??

Dunno - there’s a massive rabbit hole to disappear down though :)

A lot of folks start out with mil-surp gear as it’s tough and cheap. Suggest to start small - question will be what you want to do - start hiking and camping, or car camping, wild camping - how many people, how fit are you, what are you prepared to carry, have you done any camping before?

A campsite that isn’t designed for caravans and doesn’t have tent plots with serviced electricity is a good place to start for a night or two. Kind of bloods you, without you needing to freeze to bits half way up a mountain, and still has facilities like toilets and what not. Also suggest for cooking to start with something that allows you a hot breakfast - trangia cook sets or other knock off equivalent - you can hit the chipper for dinner. You can see the sorts of gear other people have which is educational. Big shops like gooutdoors can be good to peruse the vast array of stuff you could go for. Gumtree etc can be good for buying bundles of kit as can the forums here.

Don’t buy anything “festival”.

Not really. The forum is over 20 years old and just the general Kit sub forum has over 443 pages, each with about 20 threads. Some do discuss that sort of thing, but if you want something live, I think you will need to rekindle the conversation ;) :camping:

Anything by Erbswurst is worth a look for inexpensive gear.

Check out the various kit sub forums here.
For example, this thread was easy to find.

What specifically are you interested in or want to achieve/know? Looking to set up a complete camping kit?

Also moved thread from Resources as it wasn’t really what that sub forum was for, and shortened the title a little to make it more of a title and less the entire question.:bigok:

If you want to have a play around with tarp configurations sometime (for shade, shelter, privacy - even with a tent) you could take a look here...

Some are quite complicated but you may find two or three that work for you. I like the Adirondack Wind Shed as a shelter for cooking or lounging around when camping. I even made a frame from Hazel poles for use when no suitable trees nearby.

Or just search "tarp shelter configurations" for other ideas.
