I think you are writing to the wrong crowd, Steve. Most of us on here know this already.

I'd just add that for utter beginners, canoes are less intimidating that kayaks. It's not the stability, it is the ease of getting and out plus their fear of getting trapped if the boat capsizes.

hi,

The point I was trying to make is that canoes are not superior to kayaks, they are just different, with both advantages and disadvantages. It just rattles my cage a little when someone paddles about on a sit on top briefly and then feels they can label the whole kayaking sport as some inferior simpletons sport that requires little or no skill whilst inflicting the view on others that a open canoe is the only craft worthy of paddling.
It would be a shame for others to listen to such views and miss the opportunity of experiencing all types of paddling. I was making the point that both kayaking and canoeing are great sports that are neither superior or inferior, they are just different.
Anyway, each to their own, point made :)

Steve, it's probably best to start a new thread about the pro's and cons of paddling whatever form it's in, this thread is about the original video, I think that's why the OP put it up in the first place, so if we could leave this thread to run it's course based on the video that would be great, as I said, you're more than welcome to start a new thread about paddling generally or whatever you wish, Thanks.

I have just had a look at the Video again and tried to see which forms of canoeing I have actually participated in...
As a level 4 coach I have tried most!
Canoe multi day tripping - my favourite!
White water specialist boats - tried it, disliked it
Canoe ballet - great for learning real control but too intense for my taste (though great to watch someone practicing these skills
Ice breaking - yup, done that!
Wild river running - great fun
Flat water - very relaxing
Racing - tried it but not my thing
Sea paddling - great fun but I wrecked badly once...
Sailing - free miles! love it :)
Poling - basic technique
Lining and tracking - same
Giant boat paddling - tried it but not my thing realy
Hybrid paddling - Open boat but Kayak paddle - I have done sections of the Orange River in SA like that but would have rather have used a single blade.
Doubles - I prefer solo!

The main thing I love about the classic open canoe is its versatility and comfort - sit, kneel, half kneel, stand, go for a short walk from one end to the other....lie down and snooze I can do them all in an open - as well as the load carrying capability:)
Although I am qualified to coach kayak I find them intensely uncomfortable due to old injuries (sustained while hiking!) making sitting in one position for extended periods almost impossible.
My love of canoes and canoeing has taken me around the world (both directly and indirectly) and I owe a debt of gratitude to the person who introduced my to the craft when my paddling (kayaking) days seemed over :)
