hi tengu if your next outing is the moot ive got an adventureridge inflatable mat that is nice and thick but bulky ok if your taking the car i can bring it to the moot if you like regards dave

The primary purpose of whatever goes under you when sleeping is insulation. If you get cold, you will wake up. Get Hypothermia and you won't wake up - ever. The air beds such as the Lilo to which you refer, and the Gelert that you give as an example will provide no insulation whatsoever. . They are comfortable, but you need a layer of insulation on top of them e.g. a closed cell foam mat. If you can stand a bit of discomfort, just use the closed cell mat, as this is by far the most cost effective insulation system you can get. It is also very light, so that is a plus if you are walking far to your campsite. The so-called self inflators are essentially air beds with open-cell foam inside. They are as comfortable as an air bed, and insulate at least as well as a CCF pad. But, they are expensive.

Ive been looking at a multi mat but a sponge roll mat does it for me and its cheap, simple(no inflation/deflation) and its light :)

I generaly have a blanket under me for insulation

Thans for the offer Dave 53, what do you want in return?

hi tengu im sure you will have something at the moot that i will want out of your bits and bobs regards dave

Last summer I ummed and arred about getting an Exped Downmat or Synmat then found they were all sold out.

In the end, I got an Exped Airmat for buttons off ebay. it's the extra large size, so somewhat longer and 63cm wide vs 50cm ish normally. It was super comfortable - the extra width being a huge plus point for a side sleeper.

This year I saw Exped are doing ultralite versions of their Synmat. Again, ummed and arred, arred a bit more after discovering a couple of leaks in my Airmat (where the hell did they come from?).

Decided to get a Thermarest Prolite instead. I've only tried it in my bedroom but I wish I hadn't bought it.

An Exped Symat Ultralite is back on the shopping list - cheaper than the NeoAir, similar weight and they don't sound like you're lying on crisps packets.

I got a prolite 3/4 not long ago. light and got insulation in it. Great for light 3 season trips but not winter I reckon. Still that is why I got it to be light ad for summer use only. Used to use airbeds (lilos) as a kid. I thought they weren't actually that comfie, perhaps because they had that heavy fabric covered tough rubber construction. Hard as anything no matter how hard or soft you filled it.

BTW Neoairs had a production issue which meant they lost inflation in the early production batches. Wasn't a fault apparently but some lost inflation. Wasn't a fault or a leak but they did go down. No I don't understand that deflation isn't a fault but still they found out about it and sorted this non-problem out and they are better now. One issue is that as a lightweight, air filled mattress their inflation levels can change with air pressure. This can actually be noticeable over the time frame of one night. So if anyone has one and thinks it is faulty because it appeared to deflate overnight do check if the air pressure had changed overnight. It could be the weather not a fault causing the noticeable change in inflation levels. I only just found htis out after reading it on some guy's backpacking and walking blog website. V-G something IIRC.

Got my prolite for about £50 BTW, reduced from £70. Still probably above your target price range. You can get simple airbeds that are still good from POE (pacific outdoor equipment) for about £30 from many retailers if that helps.

Hi,
Have been using an alpkit mat for a while - robust, comfy, warm. Its good on its own, but for extra comfort ( got a dodgy back) I put a closed cell roll mat underneath. Alpkit stuff is good + value for money - just my opinion.
