I like the ones you have to inflate, like a fancy lilo

I do use lilos at the moment, but they are not trustworthy.

I have seen the reeded mats in Go outdoors, but they have a built in pump.

Another thing to fail, methinks.

o what brand should I buy? multimat, or gelert or some other?

Not sure what your budget is, but I've heard good things about the Thermarest NeoAir.

Aye, me too, they are about £110 for the large. A lot of dosh, but I'm a light sleeper so need comfort. I'd rather not spend that much but I think I will bite the bullet, just wondered of anyone knew of anything similar but cheaper!?

Tengu i dont get it at all ,on one hand you say {i like the ones you have to inflate ,like a fancy lio } so point you towards the EXPED mats which are exactly that ! then you reply with {my experience with self inflating is limited to the cheap...i dont like them at all } ???
Is it a cross linked foam matt your after ?

Having tried Karrimats etc, Thermarest classic, Alpkit Fat Aeric and Exped Down Mat, the Exped Down Mat wines hands down. Compact, very comfy and very very warm. Sleeping on one of these adds one or two seasons to your sleeping bag.

Something like this.

If I took your advice on bedding Id never get any sleep. (Hammocks and all)

But £10-£20 is a lot of money for me; I want to get the right one

I have two of those and have locked one away as they are so good that my eldest keeps trying to nick them both! They do a great job but the downside is that they take a while to huff and puff into each section.

Another vote for the Thermarest NeoAir. There is an equivalent made by Vaude called the Norrsken that is more comfortable; it doesn't weigh a great deal more (just a few grams extra), crushes down like the NeoAir and is warmer. I've got both and it's always the Vaude that makes it into my pack.

Tengu if your budget is tight, go and have a look at the Lidl's self inflating mats. A double size is under £20. We have a single one that's been in use for five years and is still sound. Heavy though, but if you're car camping, no worries.

cheers,
Toddy
