I have two things, one an individual item and the other an independent, UK company with a top reputation.
First is a Berghaus Extrem Alpine or Alpine Extrem rucksack. It is supposedly a 50 litre with something like 15litre overpack capability with the floating lid. It is a single compartment climbing sack that was my backpacking sack, still will be when I get back out.
What was so special about it? Was it the lightweight but tough fabric and design? Was it the twin, shaped stays forming an off centre X shape with the link near the shoulders? Was it the floating lid that really did not flop around too much? Was it the size being perfect for backpacking with compact kit for weeks if needed?
No it was the way the various adjustment straps allowed me to finish an 11 day backpack around the Lakes including a few scrambles and one 20 hour day. All done with a back that got strained on my first day such that I had to take ibuprofen and paracetemol all the rest of the trip. It has the means to cinch the pack right into your back but it still moved with you swiveling on the hipbelt with your hips. Yet the stays actually supported the load well and indeed supported my back. I would walk without pain but as soon as it was taken off my back I would feel pain. Seriously it seemed to support my back!!
It is kinda still useable but I would like to be able to buy the exact same thing again. Plus it cost only £90!! If it could be made and sold again at that price I would probably get a few for when it stopped being made. IT is that good.
My second is the return of Karrimor to its old position as one of two top brands in the UK. The other being Berghaus which IMHO has kinda become a poor copy of its old self, seemingly changed to practically being Go Outdoors cheapo own brand.
Karrimor had a factory shop near to where I lived. I got taken there as a kid by my parents and even cycled there too. You could buy top quality Jaguar sacks for almost half price as factory seconds or samples or strange colourway trials. The seconds were faults like three barr tack stitches when the design should be two. Three actually make very little difference and is probably stronger on strap attachment points too. So these seconds were better than ok quality but half price!!
Plus my ride out there had a steep hill I could get to 58 mph on!! It made me appreciate Karrimor even more!!!
