Sadly my five year old Berghaus Explorers have started to crack and leak a bit. They have been great and I have never really looked after them.

I am after a replacement and my gut feel is to buy another pair but I have been looking at Doolans Pro and Trek boots.

Depends what you want them to do really but for a general boot thats comfy all day, waterproof(sympatex) not to heavy with plenty of support the Magnum Elite is well worth a look (I had mine as a freebee issued at work) but at the £80/90 bracket they are alot of boot for the cash.

Well I'll be mainly using for deestalking, hiking/dog walking. But the waterproofness is key as my stalking is through long wet grass at dawn and dusk, so for 10 months of the year the boots are gonna get soaked.

Yea Sire, thoust catches on quick! Butst it seems my sooth saying is a tad out of whack, as other proclamations on this noble threade show, but then most good folk of this parish, knowe thatst my saying of sooths sprout fourth mainly from my starfish.

Personally, I wouldst bide thy time, scrimpeth and saveth, and procure a pairst of ye olde Danners for the temperate seasons, and a pair of ye olde Lundhags for the foul.

Just my two pene'th,

in my extensive experience, i would tend to go with either a leather boot with or without a goretex lining. If you go for a leather boot with few seams then go for one without goretex lining. Treated well, these will be good year round boots. If used in conjunction with gaiters, you can use them for walking the pooch's with no problems.

If you go for Goretex lined, you may find them heavy going in the summer months with the possibility of feet sweating. Without this lining, the leather will allow your feet to breathe easier.

I have Danners, Matterhorns, Lowa's, Lundhags and Altbergs and all of them are top boot's but if i had to pick year round boots i'd recommend either the Lowa's or Altbergs.

Niether are goretex lined, both have few seams yet are proofed enough to have never leaked, very comfortable and hardwearing and if you chose Altbergs, you can have them made for you and they are STILL cheaper than the others, plus you will be supporting a British company. Just remember to invest some time in maintenance and they will last you forever!

If you skimp on the purchase price, you may come to regret it, nothing is worse than wet feet, except maybe sitting on a bike with the seat removed or putting your doodah in a blender!

Me thinketh he has proclaimed much wisdom, particularly about ye olde bicycle seat and ye olde blender. Thou shouldst take muchly care of the precious doodah at all times. I findst that to maintain the doodah in fine fettle, regular quantities of raw linseed should be applied, and I oft finish this maintenance off by polishing the doodah with 0000 steele wolle dipped in pixie dust (it produces a polish like nothing else!).

I have a pair of KSB 300 eVent boots (fabric ones, not leather) and have worn them in the soaking wet (stayed dry) and in fairly hot weather (didn't sweat too much)

If the leather ones are as good as my fabric ones I'd go for them, a good and comfortable boot.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the most important factor with boots - fit.

Go to a good outdoor shop and get them fitted. I know Mendl fit me, so I know I can have everything from their range. Zamberlan hurt etc etc.

There's nothing worse than buying a pair of boots that hurt.

Isn't there an old army saying - always spend good money on your boots and your bed, you're in either one or the other.

I have consistently read that Mendl fit like slippers straight out of the box and whilst I don't currently own a pair they will be my next boots of choice (Burma's or Borneo's). I currently have Magnum's with the Sympatex liners and have fitted zipits for easy on off fitting (ideal for those late night forays from your hammock for a gypsy's kiss )

Jedediah, which alt-bergs do you have? I think I will go for the Peacekeeper 1 aqua, I have phoned them today and it sounds like they make a really good boot.
