Hickory was always the favorite here (before synthetics) for tool handles, including axes. I'd never heard of using ash until I joined this forum but I can see how it would be at least as good. I expect the switch to hickory (there) was more because of costs than anything else? I do remember when we used to use ash for baseball bats occassionally here......I am in no place to pontificate on the matter here, but I had thought riven ash was meant to be the best stuff for a handle......
