how to use a crooked knife

I have just ordere a Crook Knife (Mocotaugan). I'm planning on using it to to plane the ends of a long flat piece of ash, before soaking and shaping it into a hand drum frame. Eventually I would like to split a log and shape the plank by hand with axe and crook knife. For now I have sourced some machine sawed planks, so all I need to do is plane the ends so that they fit together when I bend it into a circular shape.

I wonder if you can recommend any resources that would help me learn how to use a crook knife competently? I have no knowledge of wood carving beyond wittling sticks with an opinel when I was a teenager.
