I think a lot of the unnecessary stuff that I'm carrying is down to a "what if I suddenly need..." mentality. For example, I carry both a plastic orange survival bag and a tarp, when the tarp could be used as an emergency shelter. My "possibles" pouch is currently 2 square mess tins with all my stuff inside an old unknown webbing bag, but I've only just recently changed to a billie-can so my bag still has both.
