How to anchor a winch in deep snow?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I know snow machines only from telly, but cannot you take some part off to use as a deadman (the seat, a cover...). With a car you use the spare tyre to dig in as an anchor (so they taught me in the Sahara of Mauritania) But I don't suppose snowmobiles carry tyres

I know the guys mentioned using deadmans earlier, but as an idea (I don't know if this would work) what about using a large snow bollard. Now one may not take the weight but you could probably make an anchor from three or four, Ice axes or snow stakes can be placed in them at specific points to make them stronger. Effectively all you would be using would be, snow, some rope, a few carabiners and possibly some snow or ice steaks.

i've just seen somthing in my new charterhouse catalogue, a chainsaw driven winch, cool or what (although at £530, i'd go with an orange bag). Still, it's another idea. Made by Lewis.
