Try a 10mm dowel cut a piece of mouse mat an glue round 2/3rds of the dowel, leave about 5mm of the mat sticking out from the end of the dowel, then use this lip to staple pieces of 400or 600 grit wet and dry to it, secure the other end of the piece of wet and dry with an elastic band and go for it :-D

Cheers

I also got one of these and a waterstone from Axminster - I ordered late'ish afternoon and they arrived the next day - hugely impressive! Are they psychic?

I have some ceramic rods that Spyderco make, Axminster sells them. If I didn't, I would be using 1200grit wet and dry wrapped around a bit of dowl. I don't think that I would bother with the mouse mat foam. I have had good results using wet and dry on a hard, flat surface for sharpening straight knives, so i would give it a try on the hooked one.

thanks for posting the link to the proper page, I spent a fruitless lunchtime looking for this on the Axminster site a couple of weeks ago.

<goes off to find if they take orders over the phone>

<10 minutes later>

Wayhay, they do; and it should get to me later this week!

Help, I think that I am being a bit thick, but once you have your wet and dry on the dowl do you sharpen the blade from the inside or the outside?
:roll:

Thanks to a slip-stone I got from Axminster, my hook-knife is now shaving sharp :roll:

But now I'm left with the problem of how to safely carry it with me when out and about! I can knock up a cardboard or bark sheath for a straight knife, but am lost for ideas on what to make for a hook-knife :oops: Maybe some sort of mask?

All suggestions gratefully received!

Try finding two large plastic screw lids and cut a notch in them. Put one lid either side and use a rubber band to hold the whole thing together.

Brilliant suggestions! Will go with finding a suitable mask as suggested to start with, but Stew's given me an idea for making a conical leather sheath with a press-stud to keep the knife in place... Will knock up some paper prototypes when I've got a few minutes
